"Fish" is a song by Jazmin Bean. It is the eighth track on their debut studio album, Traumatic Livelihood, and released alongside the album on February 23, 2024.
Background[]
During their track-by-track interview for Traumatic Livelihood, Bean stated that the song was inspired by a fish mobile game they played often at the time, and when they were going to the studio they were "not feeling it", which inspired it's fish theme and lyrics. They stated that at first they didn't want to put the song on the album or even listen to the demo, though overtime the song grew on them and they related to it most out of all songs on the album.
Bean posted a snippet of the song during 2023 through social media.
Theme[]
The song talks about Bean's former ketamine addiction and how they were constantly trying to escape it, without success, using the metaphor of being a fish trying to save themselves from multiple deadly situations. The chorus seems to be a representation of giving up and forcing yourself to love your life while it's being affected by your addiction, while the verses represent getting up and trying to escape again. During the the bridge Bean is repeating how they will try gain tomorrow, possibly showing the repeated failure of them in the past trying to escape their addiction.
